It’s time again for a new Shadowdub Q&A session. To prefigure the FatKidOnFire x Shadowdub special we forwarded some questions to one of our guests of the night at Subland.

Introduce yourself?
Ez! My name’s Matt, otherwise known as Sparxy. I’m a dubstep/bass music producer from Portsmouth UK. I’m also founder of Bacon Dubs, an independent record label specialising in deep, dark and dangerous bass music.

Describe your sound in 3 sentences
Hmmmm, not an easy one to answer! Weighty, dark and angry are 3 words that spring to mind. I’m massively influenced by DnB and a raver at heart, so when I’m building tunes I’ve always got the dancefloor in mind.

What’s your essential tool in the studio?
Would have to be my set of Fabfilter plugins. I use them on everything! They are immense.

What’s the best advice that you’ve been told for music production?
Continually push forward and evolve your sounds and techniques. Finish your tunes, but move on quickly and learn from them. Always look to gain knowledge from your work and use that knowledge in your next tune. It’s all about improving yourself and learning as much as you can. Don’t get hung up trying to make one tune sound perfect… push forward all the time!

What do you think about terms like brostep, dungeon and so on?
I think they’re a bit silly to be honest. It’s all just bass music at the end of the day. I remember when DJs used to play a bit of everything. Back in the day Andy C would come on and smash out a set full of deep bits, dark bits and dancefloor bits and everything in between, all in one set. No one seems to do that anymore in any genre really. People are keen to pigeonhole things into a particular sub-genre or sound. It’s counter-productive in my opinion.

What’s your connection to Shadowdub?
I’ll be playing at Shadowdub’s “FatKidOnFire” takeover in Berlin on 1st June and I can’t wait!!

Longdrinks or shots?
Long drinks for sure. Can’t beat a nice rum and coke! That said I am always partial to a shot of Tequila

Tell us about your plans for the future?
Keep pushing the sounds I love by making fresh tunes and putting out new material from myself and other producers on my Bacon Dubs imprint. We are aiming to be putting out vinyl by the end of 2013 which we are very excited about. We’ve also got our first label event in Portsmouth on 3rd May, and you can expect to see more Bacon Dubs events in the future in the UK and beyond!

Introduce yourself:
Easy I’m Matt aka Thelem from the UK.

Describe your sound in 3 sentences:
Tough one…I’d say Minimal, dark, atmospheric beats.

What’s your essential tool in the studio?
Definitely my computer!

What’s the best advice that you’ve been told for music production?
Not to over analyze everything and try to roll tracks out good or bad.

What do you think about terms like brostep, dungeon and so on?
I don’t think they matter in honestly, I think the terms and names just pigeon hole stuff which can lead to things going stale.

Longdrinks or shots?
Long drinks for sure! Pretty into vodka and lemonade.

Tell us about your plans for the future?
Just continue to write and release music, hopefully continue to play out and travel abroad getting to see new places I wouldn’t normally go. Also to have fun with it.

What is your connection to Shadowdub?
Playing for Shadowdub on the 2nd february 2013, can’t wait!

As appetizer for the last SHADOWDUB PARTY at SUBLAND in 2012 we had a quick chat with our guest BISWEED, exclusive mix included!

Introduce yourself?

Hello. I am Bisweed, also known as Maksim Adel but please do call me just Max. I come from Tallinn, Estonia although I speak Russian at home. I study event management at University of Tartu Viljandi Culture Academy. I have a tiny musical background: I have been playing the piano for about 5 years but I have never been good at solfege. I started building beats about 6 years ago when I was 13 or 14 and I started DJ-ing 3 years ago. It’s the second year I have been DJ-ing on our local FM radio station Raadio2. The show is called “Kajatuba” what means echo chamber from Estonian. I have got my music released via Smokin Sessions, Millions of Moments UK, Paradise Lost Recordings and other labels. My music is not quite the reflection of my personality, I am not that dark or that “chilled out“ person. I like hot girls, cold beer, tasty food and travelling. I don’t like television and I really hate when somebody is champing. I am generally pleased with what I am at the moment, but I believe there will always be some point I will be trying to reach. Maybe it’s the maximum I would say about myself. Basically if you want to find more about me, follow me on Twitter: I often start my tweets with “I hate/I love“ haha.

Describe your sound in 3 sentences

1. I don’t like to think I have my own special sound.

2. When I am asked which music I like/listen to/build I try to avoid term dubstep, replying to them just “electronic”.

3. Oh, actually there is one generalization about my sound: my music is likely to have much bass and other low frequencies.

What’s your essential tool in the studio?

I believe that mind, love, creativity, skill and at least some mid-class production hardware is the minimum which allows one to build a good piece of music. If speaking about hardware, I wouldn’t be able to build anything without a computer and a sequencer on it. I feel quite uncomfortable if I don’t have any keys or a simple MIDI-controller (I like to feel music and if I could afford, I would use hardware synths). Last but not least: the sound itself! No matter if headphones or speakers, these should sound well. These should give you as much sound and frequencies as you can afford (money, neighbours etc). These all are VERY improtant, this is the essential minimum for me, I would say. But.

Ears are the most essential. If you can’t hear, you can’t be sure if your idea sounds like the way it should. I try to protect my ears, especeially when being out of studio. All the DJs and producers, but also clubbers, save your ears!

What’s the best advice that you’ve been told for music production?

“No triplet stuff”. Jokes. While I wasn’t DJ-ing yet I was told my tunes’ intros hadn’t been DJ-friendly and I started making some more commonly structurised tunes: intro (with hats!) – drop – drop’s variation – breakdown – 2^nd drop – again variation – outro. This structure is super-DJ-friendly. But I think I have lost some originality by following this advice. I started to forget that I don’t only make music for DJ-s. But it’s all right now. Maybe the best advice is what I have found in the Internet myself. It sounds like this: “be sober while making music”.

What do you think about terms like brostep, dungeon and so on?

To be honest, it’s actually a tricky question because I have never thought anything of brostep and dungeon. Now I have to think up my attitude to answer your question. Chillstep is the funniest term! I don’t like when my tunes are categorized as chillstep. Let’s say I hardly ever use all these terms, actually. I even sometimes try to avoid such words as hard or deep to describe music because everyone have got their own understanding of what is hard and what is deep. Dark is cool though. I like dark stuff. I like the other stuff as well. Maybe I prefer to give exact examples when speaking about music: “I like stuff like Silkie’s Concrete Jungle but I don’t feel I will ever like Borgore’s Ice Cream. I would be interested to hear more tunes like Ill K’s Time Machine”.

I actually like how the thigs were back in the day. Everythig was just classified as dubstep.

Tell us about your plans for the future?

First I need to finish the tune called Greed. This will be the last tune on Tsar Bomba EP (Paradise Lost Recordings) and will be available only in digital format. The rest of EP is a result of hard work within long period of time and I am really glad we are finally so close to release it on vinyl. It contains such tunes as Ghosts VIP, Question (collaboration with AX Farel from Moscow), Catacombs, Tsar Bomba and a 130 BPM Greed. Also, there will be some free surprises connected with this EP. Big up Rob Robotic, big up AX Farel, big up Exponaut big up the whole Paradise Lost crew and everyone who has been supporting or feeling these tunes. I am really looking forward to this to happen but as far as the work is not quite finished yet, this is the number one plan for the future for me.

I am also trying to work with several saxophone musicians. Hope that the result of these collaborations will sound well. I believe I will build and play more 130 BPM stuff in future. I’m pretty much interested in my mate’s label Strictly Dub Records so I’m trying to help Mr. Chaozlevel to organize that stuff because I really believe this label will bring good lots of good music in future. Can’t tell you more, let’s just live and see what happens.

We had a little Q&A with INFRA, check it out!

- Introduce yourself

Hi, ich bin INFRA und produziere Schallwellen im Bereich von 18 – 18000 Hz, von denen man ein paar auf Shadowdub und anderen Labels, wie F4TMusic und Phantom Hertz, hören kann. Ich wohne in Berlin und veranstalte hier zusammen mit meiner Crew Dubmarine und im Impulse Kollektiv Dubstep-Parties. Außerdem spiele ich regelmäßig im Subland auf den Shadowdub Nights.

- Was macht Deinen Sound aus, in 3 Sätzen?

Ich will mit meinen Tracks generell immer Welten entstehen lassen und meine Ästhetischen Vorstellungen darin unterbringen. Sie sind Reflektion unserer in Teilen hochtechnologisierten Umwelt und dienen mir als allumspannendes Bindeglied zwischen akustischer Umwelt und Musik und als integrativer Bestandteil fiktionaler Klänge in unserer Moderne. Ein meditatives Moment in den Tracks ist mir trotz aller Affinität zur Technologie sehr wichtig, da es den Gegenpol zur Entrücktheit der Wissenschaft und unserer schnellebigen Konsumgesellschaft bildet und sowohl dem Hörer, als auch mir selbst, Raum gibt sich mit der Musik und den oben genannten Welten zu beschäftigen oder einfach in die eigenen Ebenen abzutauchen.

- Wie kam die Verbindung zu Shadowforces zu Stande?

Ich habe Species (label boss) 2010 hier in Berlin kennengelernt, als er noch zusammen mit E-DNA die Shadowdub Parties im RAW veranstaltet hat. Er hatte dann die Idee ein paar der hier vorhandenen Crews zu einer wöchentlichen Dubstep-Veranstaltung zusammen zu bringen, woraus die seit über zwei Jahre laufende Impulse entstanden ist, die wir am Anfang noch gemeinsam veranstaltet haben. Seitdem machen wir immer wieder was zusammen.

- Deine Gedanken zur derzeitigen Entwicklung von Drum&Bass und Dubstep?

Es geht bergauf! Letztes Jahr um diese Zeit war ich mir nocht nicht so sicher, wie sich das Ganze weiterentwickeln würde. Die Top 100 dieser Genres in den englischen Charts waren so voll mit Kitsch, dass ich dachte wir hätten mit unserem Sound keine Zukunft. Aber es haben sich in dieser Zeit auch viele Labels und Artists etabliert, die den deepen und wirklich bassbetonten Style pushen und das spürt man sehr deutlich. Zwar sind die Hörgewohnheiten der meisten Menschen immer noch vom Zwang nach Melodien und dem in der regulären Popmusik vorherrschenden Mittenbereich geprägt, aber immer mehr werden mit dem Drang sich vom Bass bewegen zu lassen infiziert. Einzig gute Sound Systems, die das leisten können, sind immer noch zu wenig vorhanden.

- Dein wichtigstes Tool im Studio?

Meine Yamaha NS-10M Studio mit ihren schönen weißen Papiermembranen. Es ist wie alle sagen: „Klingt es auf denen gut, klingt es überall gut.“

- Der beste Producing-Tip den Du je bekommen hast?

In verschiedenen Phasen zu arbeiten und diese möglichst strikt zu trennen. Ich tendiere dazu das Sound Design, Arrangement, Mixing etc. immer gleichzeitig zu machen und das stört meinen Fokus. Das Resultat ist dann, dass ich mich gerne mal verzettel oder einfach zu lange mit Kleinigkeiten aufhalte. Vielleicht ist es auch der Tip, sich nicht zu lange mit Kleinigkeiten zu beschäftigen, aber dann kämen mir die Details zu kurz. Siehst Du, in welcher Zwickmühle ich da stecke?

- Deine Pläne fürdie Zukunft?

Mich noch mehr in die auditive Wahrnehmung einzuarbeiten und Klang weiter verstehen zu lernen.
